If you're a DIYer, or you already have an installer booked before Thanksgiving... you're a unicorn. Truly. Please send some of those good vibes my way, because lining up the stars like that is a gift. So if you're wondering when to order wallpaper... the answer is now.
For the rest of us, here's my honest take on holiday wallpaper timing. Fall calendars fill up fast. Good installers book out weeks ahead, the house is about to fill up with garland and family, and nobody wants a ladder in the dining room the week before Thanksgiving.
So here's what I'd do instead when it comes to when to order wallpaper... Order your wallpaper now for a January refresh. Let the rolls sit pretty in a closet through the holidays. OR BETTER YET, gift wrap the box and stick it under the tree. Then act really surprised when you open it, and thank whoever happens to be sitting closest to you.
Then, the minute the decorations come down and your walls are bare again, it's the first project you tackle in 2027.
WHEN TO ORDER WALLPAPER: sooner than you think
ORDER NOW: so the rolls are waiting on you
I keep my wallpaper rolls stocked here in Louisiana, so when a pattern is in stock, it ships quickly. But stock moves. When a colorway sells through, it becomes made to order, and that's an 8–10 week wait. Order in October and you're covered either way.
Order every roll you need in one go. Rolls are printed in batches called dye lots, and a later order may not match the first one exactly. If you're not sure how many you need, my measuring guide walks you through it (no math degree required). Then add one extra roll. Future you will thank you.
BOOK THE INSTALLER: before everyone else does
January is a popular month for home projects, and installers know it. Call yours now and get a date on the calendar for after the holidays. If you don't have an installer, ask your local paint store or a designer friend who they trust.
LIVE WITH YOUR SAMPLES: all season long
This is my favorite part. While the rolls wait, tape your sample up on the wall you're papering and leave it there through the holidays. Look at it under lamp light at 5pm when it gets dark too early. Look at it next to the tree, the candles, the cozy blanket on the sofa.
By January, you won't be wondering if you love it. You'll know.
Samples are $9 and ship free... shop samples.
JANUARY: bare walls, fresh start
You know that feeling when the decorations come down and the house suddenly looks a little... naked? Every year I take down the garland and my living room looks like it's waiting for something.
That's your moment. The walls are already cleared, the furniture is already being shuffled around, and you're in a fresh-start mood anyway. Wallpaper is the best kind of New Year's resolution, because you only have to do it once.
COZY PICKS: my personal favorites
These are the patterns I keep coming back to when I want a room to feel cozy. Tulips in Midnight and Sweeping Flora wrap a room up like a blanket. Starlit keeps a little glow around long after the lights come down. The Azaleas in this deep brass has stayed on the best seller list. The Filagree pattern is perfect when you want your pattern to whisper. And Classic Plaid is a cozy flannel shirt for your walls.
How should I store my wallpaper if I'm not ready to hang it?
Honestly? Wherever you want... as long as it's dry and climate controlled. Keep the rolls in their packaging, lying flat or standing up. Just not the garage or the attic.
What if the pattern I want is out of stock?
It becomes made to order, which takes 8–10 weeks. If you order now, that still lands you in the new year, right on schedule.
Can I still get wallpaper installed before the holidays?
If your rolls are in stock and your installer is booked, go for it. If not, let's shoot for January.
How many rolls do I need?
Start with my measuring guide, then add one extra roll for mistakes and touch-ups. Your installer will always have the final say. Or just shoot me an email at hi@byhopejohnson.com and I'll help you measure.
