Is wallpaper a big commitment?
Yes… and no.
Wallpaper isn’t about trend-chasing — it’s about choosing a pattern that feels aligned with the season of life you’re in. When you select something that works with your architecture, your light, and your lifestyle, it doesn’t feel like a risk. It feels intentional.
And the beautiful part? With proper installation and removal, traditional wallpaper can absolutely be updated down the road. Homes evolve. That’s allowed.
What's the difference of tradition, peel & stick, and removable wallpaper anyway?
Traditional Wallpaper
Traditional wallpaper is installed using paste—either pre-pasted on the paper or applied separately like a glue. The process takes a bit of patience, but many people find it almost cathartic. Because the paste stays workable while wet, you have time to slide the paper into place and adjust as needed, which makes it a surprisingly forgiving installation method.
Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper
Peel-and-stick wallpaper functions much like a large sticker. It can be a more budget-friendly option and appeals to those wanting a quicker project. That said, installation can be a bit tedious since once it touches the wall, there isn’t much room to reposition and the more you do so, the more stick you lose. Depending on the wall surface and adhesive, it may also leave residue or cause minor wall damage when removed.
Removable Wallpaper
“Removable” Wallpaper actually refers more to how wallpaper comes down than how it goes up. Many wallpapers today are designed to be removable whether it's traditionally pasted or peel & stick wallpaper, though some are more easily stripped than others. Traditional wallpaper, when installed with a strippable paste, is designed for clean removal later on. Peel & Stick wallpaper, if labeled as removable, is geared towards temporary or short-term installs (think rental spaces, craft level projects, merchandised spaces that change often, etc.)
Is traditional wallpaper a better route than peel & stick?
In most cases, yes — especially when quality and longevity matter. Traditional wallpaper, when installed correctly, goes on smoother, looks more elevated, and holds up beautifully over time. It’s the better choice when you’re looking for a finish that truly lasts with the added benefits of little to no damage if you want to change the vibe down the road.
What if I want to remove my wallpaper down the road?
With proper wall prep, wallpaper absolutely does not ruin your walls. Most wallpapers today use modern glues that are designed to be removable, especially when applied over primed surfaces.
If you ever decide to remove it, it’s more like a gentle process than a full-on renovation. No damage, just a little steam or water and some patience.
How do I pick the right pattern for my space?
Don’t overthink it.
Truly.
The right pattern is the one that works with your room — not against it. Look at what already lives there: your upholstery, your rugs, your wood tones, your lighting. A wallpaper doesn’t have to match everything perfectly. It just needs to feel at home among the layers.
If your room is already busy, try a smaller-scale or tonal pattern.
If your room feels flat, try something with movement and contrast.
If your heart skips a beat when you see it? That’s usually your answer.
TIP: Start with picking up a few samples that showcase different vibes. Grab a small scale and a large scale pattern, maybe a plaid/stripe and a floral. Grab a darker moody hued pattern and a lighter neutral hued pattern. Just see how they look and feel in your space.
Wallpaper works best when it complements the room — not when it’s chosen in isolation.
What if I pick the wrong choice?
There isn’t necessarily just one perfect choice, but there are several options that will work for your space. Most hesitation comes from trying to predict every possible future mood you might have in that space. But homes aren’t math equations. They’re lived in.
Choose the pattern that feels aligned with how you want the room to feel — cozy, fresh, dramatic, nostalgic, calm.
You can trust yourself more than you think.
Can anyone install traditional wallpaper or does it require a professional install?
Like most crafts, wallpapering requires a bit of patience and skill—but the effort is about on par with a well-prepped paint job. If you're not up for the DIY, hiring an installer is a great option as well.
