Rug Rules for the Home

NETURAL VERSUS PATTERN

Rugs are a powerful tool in interior design, offering you both a visual appeal and functional benefits. Whether you're aiming to ground a space with neutral tones or make a bold statement, rugs can, no doubt, effortlessly transform a room. A neutral rug, with its subtle texture, can add warmth and cohesion, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. On the other hand, a vibrant, patterned rug can bring personality and energy to a space, serving as a focal point in the room.

If you haven’t read last month’s post about layering your space, it’s a good read if you’re deciding what and where to bring in pattern (like in a rug).

CONSIDER THE FUNCTION

When considering function, the choice between new or vintage rugs plays a significant role. New rugs, especially washable ones, are perfect for high-traffic areas or homes with kids and pets, offering both practicality and easy maintenance. Vintage rugs, with their unique history and character, bring an undeniable charm, adding a touch of nostalgia and depth to your space. Each type of rug, whether new or vintage, serves its own purpose, making it essential to choose the one that aligns with both your aesthetic vision and lifestyle needs.

RUG PLACEMENT 101

LIVING ROOM LAYOUT

For smaller living spaces, choose a rug that is slightly smaller than your furniture layout, placing the front two legs of your furniture on the rug.

For a larger living spaces, you'll want a rug that is large enough for your entire furniture layout to be placed on top.

BEDROOM LAYOUT

A bedroom rug should be placed about 70-80% of the way up under your bed frame, leaving the end table off the rug.

If you'd rather not cover your floor, opt for two small area rugs or runners on the left and right side of the bed.

KITCHEN RUG LAYOUT

If you have a longer layout kitchen, a runner is a great option for add comfort in an otherwise practical and functional space.

You may want to only have a smaller 3x5 style area rug at the kitchen sink.

DINING ROOM LAYOUT

For your dining space, you should allow enough space to fit your table and your dining chairs comfortably on your rug.

Whether your rug is rectangular or round, be sure to allow 24" behind your chairs to allow for entry and exit.
