Measuring for Wallpaper
A KIND DISCLAIMER:
Please note that FINAL MEASUREMENTS SHOULD BE QUOTED BY AN INSTALLER OR PROFESSIONAL. There are extra margins your installer will measure for not accounted by the math below. This is merely to give an estimate for a yardage quote.
MATH NOT YOUR THING? Don’t worry …that’s what installers are for anyway. Whether you DIY your wallpaper install or hire it out (I’m a fan of outsourcing) the main question is :
HOW MUCH WALLPAPER WILL YOU NEED?
Don’t be scared of the math, this is third grade stuff. Also, I have children who are learning math much differently than I learned math, so I feel it’s necessary to say that some third grade math is admittedly scary …but this isn’t that, so we’re good.
. . .
ROOM MEASUREMENTS YOU WILL NEED
W = width of wall from left to right
H = height of wall from floor to ceiling
extra measure
-don’t subtract for doors and ceilings unless they are floor to ceiling height
-always add 6” to your height
WALLPAPER SPECS:
In order to receive a rough or proper quote, you will need to know your wallpaper specs. Specs may vary from one company to the next but should be listed in the item’s description and easily accessible. Wallpaper is typically either purchased by the linear yard or by the bolt.
by the linear yard
A linear yard is a vertical height of one yard (36 inches) by the width of the product (which may vary).
by the bolt:
The bolt is simple an entire run of wallpaper in one continuous length. Different manufactures may have different bolt lengths that add up to a certain amount of linear yards.
MEASURING BY THE LINEAR YARD
don’t forget to convert feet to inches
FOR EXAMPLE:
W = 12 feet from left to right = 144 inches
H = 10 feet from floor to ceiling x 12 inches = 120 inches
I know my wallpaper is 27 inches wide. So let’s figure out how many panels we need first.
NUMBER OF PANELS:
144 inches (w) ÷ 27” (wallpaper width) = 5.33*
I NEED SIX PANELS TO COVER THE WIDTH OF MY WALL
I know my wallpaper is sold by the linear yard (and that 1 yard = 36 inches). So let’s figure out height we need for each panel.
LINEAR YARD (or height) PER PANEL:
120 inches (h) ÷ 36” (wallpaper width) = 3.33*
I NEED FOUR LINEAR YARD PER PANEL TO COVER THE HEIGHT OF MY WALL
. . .
Basically, it will take FOUR 36” sections per panel to go from floor to ceiling …and six panels to go from left to right.
ORDER QUANTITY
6 x 4 = 24 yards
*You’ll notice I rounded up. Better to round up and have extra than not enough. Food for though - if your calculations put you at say, 5.8, I’d maybe round up to 7 yards as opposed to six yards.
MEASURING BY THE BOLT
Measuring by the bolt is honestly the same math as above. You’ll still need to know the number of panels and how much linear yardage you will need. The only difference is whether or not your yardage needed is covered by the yardage available on one bolt. You are basically calculating how many bolts you need. If you have extra yardage on the bolt, bonus! Go wallpaper something else.
ALL BY HOPE WALLPAPERS ARE MEASURED BY THE LINEAR YARD
Why you ask? Our papers are made to order and calculated by the yard needed to ensure as little waste as possible. Our papers are printed from a small business right here in the states using eco-friendly, water-based inks. We are doing our part to leave a smaller carbon footprint on Mother Earth.
ALL final measurements should be professionally quoted prior to placing orders. Please reach out at hi@byhopejohnson.com with any questions. We’d be happy to help navigate and answer questions between you and your installer.
