Create More White Space (for the home & mind)

White space is, by definition, the space between objects. When it comes to your home, white space is both physical and mental (and does not have to be white). White space in the home refers to the physical “breathing room” between spaces, rooms, and objects.

White space can bring a room such a sense of calm. It can declutter both your physical surroundings as well as your mind. It just makes you feel good and that is what we are all after - a sense of joy within our home.

There are 100s of ways to create more white space, again both physically or through emotion. There are daily practices you can implement that will help create a sense or order and operations to keeping your humble abode calm, orderly, and in turn, keeping your wellness state the same.

01.
DECLUTTER

Do this intentionally and often. This task can be as big as a room or as small as your kitchen junk drawer. Doing it often and consistently will keep your home from busting at its seams and allow for more white space.

02.
CLEAR THE FLOOR

Keeping things off the floor allow your space to breath and force the eyes to move upward and outward. Create a space for things that naturally fall to the floor (a bin for shoes, a wall-hook for bags, etc.).

03.
LET THE WALLS TALK

It’s okay to fill your walls with artwork or have bare walls. It’s okay to wallpaper your walls. The guide here is to let the walls (or what’s hanging) do the talking.

Statement pieces come in a many ways. Whether your statement piece is a blank wall, a floral floor-to-ceiling wallpaper install, or a collage of collected artwork, be mindful of the rooms and furnishings around the “statement” and look for an equal balance with your white space.

04.
THE DAILY ACT OF TIDYING

The key to keeping your space calm and orderly is the simple act of tidying up. As you leave a room, pick just a few things to tidy up (fold a blanket, collect anything out of place, etc.). This will become an act of habit that you do all day and, by return, keeps your house nice and tidy.

05.
PRETTY YOUR PANTRY

Take a look at your pantry (or your bathroom cabinets) and see what you can unbox and place in a jar. No one wants to see that bright yellow cereal box.

06.
UNSUBSCRIBE & UNFOLLOW

Go through your inbox and unsubscribe. You can binge unsubscribe all at once or do it over the course of time. WORTH IT. Then go clean up your social media feed by unfollowing the accounts you need filling up your feed and brain space.

07.
FIGHT THE URGE TO PLEASE EVERYONE

You can say no. You can say “not right now.” You can refer someone to someone else. You do not have to be everyone’s hero.

08.
CLEAN OUT YOUR CAMERA ROLL

It’s probably something you’ve been meaning to do for a while, right? Take a minute to first declutter your first, second, and third takes. Keep the good shot and delete the rest. Then back up your photos and make some room on your phone for more beautiful shots (good practice: delete as you go).

09.
VISIT YOUR DUMP ZONES

You know you have a few. It’s your desk, your mudroom counter, your dining room table …clean off those areas and better yet, solve the problem. Find a place for those things you keep dumping (a key hook, a mail bin, etc.).

10.
DO NOTHING

YES. That’s right. Make some space in your day, or a whole day, to do absolutely nothing. Don’t underestimate the power of simply sitting and letting your thoughts take you on a ride. If you don’t have all day, set a timer for 10 minutes and sit somewhere peaceful and just close your eyes and breath.
