Unexpected Red | it’s not new
The unexpected red theory has been flooding social media this season in the home decor world, but this isn’t a new concept. The attention-grabbing theory has been used from Claude Monet’s Poppy Fields, Marilyn Monroe’s red lipstick, to Jackie Kennedy’s iconic red jacket. More literally, it’s used for stop signs, traffic lights, and LED-lit exit signs in commercial spaces. Pops of red grab your attention and ignite you to react, whether it’s keeping you from driving into traffic or a double-take of something visually interesting or attractive.
Using the same concept in your home will give you the same result - a reaction. Pops of red in the home immediately draw attention and interest in your space. It doesn’t have to be fire-engine red either. You can take a more subjective route. Get creative!
I’m a big fan and collector of items from Schoolhouse. I have a healthy handful of their quilts, several of their sconces, some chairs, and other little home decor pieces. IMO, they do the unexpected red better than any brand I collect from. West Elm and Target are close seconds. …and you can never go wrong with art prints as your pop. Artfully Walls has a huge collection of art and you can search by color, by several shades of red actually! That’s a low-commitment and affordable way to test out different spaces of your home.
MY FAVORITE POPS OF RED
from shelf knick-knacks to investment pieces
From small shelf knick-knacks to larger investment pieces, the pop of red is just always going to work. If true crayon red scares you, look for pieces with a little more terracotta in them or a deeper hue of red. …or even a peachier/orange-ish red (real technical terms here). If it’s all WAY too scary, just start with red flowers.
