December | less is more + merry
A Minimal Christmas season is gaining traction.
In a world that often feels over scheduled/worked/paced, choosing a minimalist approach to decorating for the holidays is where my personal peace is landing this year. It appears I’m not the only one.
On a recent blog post by Michael Helwig Interiors, I find myself in good company. I couldn’t quite put a finger on why keeping things simple felt more wholesome, but these words explain well what’s going on inside my head and heart.
Whether it's a temporary choice for this year or a permanent shift in my perspective, scaling back has given me a profound sense of peace and intention to the season. The below items are really my main pieces this year. I have a few small Christmas trees sprinkled throughout the house. I let the five year old decorate the tree, I put a wreath on the front door, and that’s about it.
I’m all about a minimalist Christmas because all year round, my decor is the opposite. So this gives a nice little “dusting” of holiday spirit around an already full house.
For me, the simplicity is more about providing space for the mind to savor the white space in the day — not just in my home, but in between what has been a collectively heavy political season for what seems like the world as a whole, a consistent focus of mine to be as sustainable and mindful as possible on what enters the home, and honestly, it’s just been a really busy year, so my extra energy is going towards the well-being of the people under my roof (even though there are no lights on the roof this year).
No matter where you are in life—financially, emotionally, or physically—minimalism allows you to embrace the holidays on your own terms. Sometimes, the most magical Christmas isn’t about what you add to your life but what you let go of.
So this year, give yourself the gift of simplicity. After all, the most cherished moments are often the simplest ones.
xx,
Hope
